Friends, this incident is both fascinating and miraculous. Even science and American doctors were baffled by what happened. A famous American doctor once told me, “My friend, you will never be able to speak again.” But when I eventually started speaking, I made a call to him. At first, he couldn’t believe it. But when I shared memories of our earlier meetings, he admitted, “My friend, this is nothing short of a miracle.”
When I began my journey across America from Santa Monica, California, heading from west to east, an unfortunate incident occurred before I reached Houston. My bicycle bag was stolen, and with it, many important documents, photo albums, negatives, electronic cooking equipment I had purchased in Japan, and an entire collection of world currencies. This loss was a massive blow.
In Houston, I stayed at an International Youth Hostel located in a residential area. The area was somewhat dangerous—after 5 or 6 in the evening, one couldn’t venture outside alone. The hostel itself was small and situated in a quiet neighborhood with very little foot traffic. For days, I sat either in my room or on the bench outside the hostel, lost in thought about my stolen belongings. I even forgot to eat, only surviving on tea. I avoided talking to anyone and spent my time pacing between my room and the hostel’s veranda, unsure of what to do next. What hurt me the most was losing my photo album, a treasured collection that held pictures of numerous dignitaries I had met worldwide, along with their negatives. For nearly three days, I remained in this state, neglecting food and growing weaker. I could hardly stand, let alone walk. During this time, I didn’t speak to anyone, and no one approached me.
On the fourth morning, as I sat silently outside the hostel, the manager came over and asked, “My friend, what’s wrong? Why are you sitting so quietly and not speaking to anyone? I’ve noticed you haven’t eaten anything for the past three days. Please tell me what’s troubling you.” Hearing this, I tried to explain what had happened, but to my shock, no sound came out of my mouth. Only air escaped my lips. Despite trying my hardest, I couldn’t produce a single word. Alarmed, I broke down into tears. Seeing me like this, the manager sat beside me, patted my back, and encouraged me to eat something first, assuming my weakness might be causing my inability to speak.
The manager prepared breakfast for me, and after eating, I felt a little stronger. I tried again to speak, but still, no sound came out. Panic started to set in as I realized I couldn’t speak anymore. This new problem left me in a state of despair. That evening, I decided to visit a nearby supermarket to buy some food. While there, I unexpectedly ran into four Pakistani Dawoodi Bohra students. They recognized me by my Topi (Cap) and approached me, asking where I was from and where I was staying.
What happened after this encounter was something I could never have imagined. At that moment, I felt as if Allah Ta’ala had sent them to me for a purpose.
