After waking up in the morning and getting ready, I had breakfast in the canteen and left for the Indian Embassy. Upon reaching the embassy, I approached the receptionist and mentioned that I wanted to meet the High Commissioner. The receptionist called the High Commissioner and informed him, “Sir, Mr. Taher is here to meet you. Should I send him to your office?” When the High Commissioner agreed, I proceeded to his cabin. A few moments later, tea was served. After a sip, I discussed my need for visas for Japan and America. The High Commissioner immediately contacted the Japanese and American High Commissioners, explained my situation, and said, “You should first visit the Japanese Embassy, which is nearby. Once you get the visa, return here.”

When I reached the Japanese Embassy, I was once again taken aback. The Japanese High Commissioner himself came outside to receive me. After a brief conversation with him, he promptly issued me a new visa for Japan, attaching it to my passport. Even the Japanese High Commissioner seemed quite impressed with me. After securing the visa, I returned to the Indian Embassy.

Now, the question that had been weighing on my mind since yesterday was one I wanted to ask the High Commissioner. However, I didn’t know how to bring it up. I kept pondering over it, trying to gather my courage. Suddenly, the High Commissioner looked at me and asked, “Madraswala! What are you thinking?” This gave me the confidence to ask, so I immediately said, “Sir, a question has been running through my mind since yesterday…” Before I could continue, he interrupted and said, “Taher Bhai, I know what you want to ask. You want to ask why I insulted you so much in Italy but am now treating you with such respect.” I immediately replied, “Yes, Sir, that’s exactly my question.” The High Commissioner smiled and explained, “When you came to Italy, every other day, someone would come to the embassy crying about how their money was lost, their belongings were stolen, or they were pickpocketed. Many of them were fraudsters, and I assumed you were the same. I thought you were just making up stories to gain sympathy. But when I saw you here after so many years, I realized that you were genuine. That’s why I’m giving you this respect now. Let me tell you something else: since you arrived in Australia, starting from Melbourne, I’ve been seeing you on TV and in newspapers. I was already aware of your journey and was actually waiting for you to reach me.”

Hearing this, whatever anger or hatred I had held against him instantly vanished. I wholeheartedly thanked the High Commissioner for his honesty and support. I stayed in Canberra for a few more days, completing my meetings, media interactions, and other tasks. Before leaving, I visited the High Commissioner again to say goodbye. He hugged me warmly and bid me farewell. With that, I left the embassy, got on my bicycle, and started my journey toward Sydney. This was my one and only bittersweet encounter with a High Commissioner.

Friends, this story ends here. Now, I’d like your opinion—should I continue sharing one interesting story after another from my journey, or should I start from the very beginning, explaining how and why I embarked on this journey? Please share your thoughts in the comment section.
