Chapter 3: The Incident at the Indian Embassy in Italy

Friends,

Today, as I sat down to write my biography, about the incident at the Indian Embassy in Italy, suddenly I heard loud thunder and lightning from the sky. I stood by the window of my house, watching as it started raining heavily. I got so lost in watching the rain that it brought back the entire memory of my time in Italy, and I drifted deep into my thoughts…

Right now, rain is pouring down from the sky, just like, at that time, tears were pouring from my eyes. After seeing this rainy atmosphere, I vividly remembered that interesting incident because the Indian High Commissioner had insulted me in Italy and made me cry, while that same High Commissioner later brought tears of joy to my eyes in Australia.”

This is a story that you will thoroughly enjoy reading. At the start, I was traveling with a friend. When we were in the capital of Greece, Athens, we met two South Indian cyclists. These two had come directly from India to Greece. After meeting us and learning about our records, they were quite impressed, and they requested us, “Please, let us join your journey.”

We told them, “Okay, give us a day or two to think it over, and we’ll get back to you.” Greece was the first European country on our journey. The next morning, we went out exploring Athens and later decided to rest in a garden. We were stunned by the scene there. In the garden, everyone was sitting so close, practically cheek-to-cheek. It was our first time witnessing European culture.

Those two South Indian cyclists were with us, and they were staring at everyone and taking pictures nonstop. After two days of careful thought, we decided, “Alright, instead of just two, let’s make it four of us. It’ll be fun.”

The next day, we held a press conference and announced that these two South Indian cyclists would join us from here on our journey ahead. After that, we went to the embassies for visas for France and England. Seeing our files and records, both countries granted us visas. These two also received their visas.

Then, the four of us began our journey, cycling through Greece. After visiting some places, we took a ship from the coast of Greece to Italy. From there, we cycled to Rome and checked into a hotel, all four of us.

The next morning, out of nowhere, these two started fighting with us for no reason. My friend and I left the room to cool off. When we returned to the hotel a few hours later, the two had disappeared along with their cycles and our belongings. They had taken our gas stove and other things we had bought in partnership in Athens.

It was only after they left that we realized they had entirely different intentions that we hadn’t understood. These two had wanted to settle in France or England, but since they weren’t getting visas, they had joined us. They took our belongings and left, and we had run out of money, too. We were in deep tension, wondering what to do next and how we would continue our journey. In Rome, we didn’t find a single Indian or anyone from my community.

Finally, the next morning, we went to the Indian embassy and requested an appointment to meet the High Commissioner, but with great difficulty, they gave us a time two days later. When we finally met High Commissioner Mr. Akbar Khalili, our situation was so dire, it felt like we had no blood left in us.
